    Plant Requirements

Good Drainage: Use a fast draining potting mix, such as one labeled "Cactus Mix"

Adequate light: Succulents generally will not thrive on a wall that gets mostly shade throughout the day.

Dry periods: Water sparingly and allow potting mix to dry out between waterings. Hang planter in an area that is not exposed to lots of moisture.

Rest: Most succulents are dormant in the winter, and the planter can be enjoyed indoors if kept near a sunny window.

    Plant Selection

Look for plants that are dwarf varieties, stay relatively small, or are very slow growers.

Limit selection to a few varieties. When shopping for plants, it's easy to get caught up choosing one of this and one of that, but the end result may look a bit hodge-podge. Better to plant multiples of a few different varieties.

Pamela Crawford had great success with the Echeveria (rosette forming succulents), stating that they really thrived. This is great news, as they can be some of the most attractive of all succulents and come in a variety of colors. Sedum 'Angelina' was also a winner and worked well for covering the coco liner.
